Mercedes GLK could be LHD only

The newest small crossover wagon in Mercedes' lineup might not get a right-hand drive variant. Despite high expected demand in RHD countries, the GLK is built on the left-hand drive C-class 4Matic platform, and Mercedez-Benz has no plans to make a RHD variant available. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz Australia will push for the change at a conference in Stuttgart, Germany this week.
MB_GLK_update_small.jpg
Built on the LHD-only C-Class 4Matic platform, the GLK is not likely to receive a RHD version because the conversion would require significant engineering investment, reports GoAuto. Some believe the investment would be worthwhile in the long haul, but clearly corporate headquarters is not yet in agreement. While a Mercedes-Benz exec is quoted as understanding that the chances of getting the conversion approved are "less than 50-50″ it will nevertheless be pursued. The GLK would compete with BMW's X3, Audi's Q5 and Volvo's XC60 in RHD markets if approved. If it is not, those competitors will have an easier time.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2007: Mercedes F700 With DiesOtto Engine

Mercedesis bringing the green to the upcoming 2007 Frankfurt Motor Showwith their new sedan concept car, the F700. Remember that DiesOtto engine that we told you about a while back?

It's making its debut in this new
luxury sedan. To refresh your memory, that engine produces 238hp and 295ft-lb. of torque from just 1.8 liters of displacement using some new technology known to many as homogeneous charge compression ignition, or HCCI, which "operates in compression ignition mode under light loads and spark ignition at other times" according to our own Sam Abuelsamid.

The fuel mileage of the car with the DiesOtto engine is expected to be almost 40 miles per gallon, which is excellent for such a large vehicle.

The new
Mercedes F700 conceptis just one of 18 vehicles that Mercedes is expected to showcase, including new Bluetec diesels and hybridswith both gasoline and diesel engines.

Mercedes Develops New Diesel Petrol Engine Will Show on Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to display several new frugal drivetrain concepts at September's Frankfurt Motor Show, the latest being a new 'DiesOtto' engine that will be revealed for the first time later this month.

The new engine features engine concepts that characterize both diesel and petrol motors, and promises to be as clean as petrol enginesbut as efficient as diesels.

The technology is similar to Volkswagen's recently announced Gasoline Compression Ignition system, which works by using spark plugs during start-up and hard acceleration, while relying on sparkless compression ignition, like a diesel, during low load situation

In an interview with Automotive News, a Mercedesofficial explained that VW's technology is still several years away because it requires a special synthetic fuel that's still in development, while the Mercedeswill run on regular petrol.

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating 10 years of operation at its Tuscaloosa

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating 10 years of operation at its Tuscaloosa, AL facility, which is best known for producing the M-Class SUV. At a press event held at the plant and presided over by Dr. Z himself, the automaker presented a special edition version of its SUV stalwart dubbed "Edition10." The Edition10 limited-edition package is a paint-and-trim deal that's quite good-looking, actually. The requisite badges are joined by other visual highlights such as darkened trim around the headlamps, darker taillamp lenses, a black chrome look to the grille, and a similar treatment on the hood vents. A two-tone interior and metallic pedals are also included, and based on what we see in the photos released, a metal steprail is also part of the package. No pricing for the Edition10 option has been released yet, and we'd expect to see some additional shots of the SUV before all is said and done.

Mercedes E 63 AMG Latest Spy Photos

Mercedes is preparing the new generation E-Class, code named W 212, for release in mid 2009. Although, there is nothing new to report since our last installment of E 63 AMG spy photos, here are the most recent photos of the heavily disguised prototype.

The disguise on the test car is still hiding details of the new styling which feature elements from the just launched C-Class, however, we can see the overall shape resembling the new S-Class.

After considerable quality problems with the current E-Class, Mercedes is now striving hard to increase the quality standard of the new model to its highest possible level .

The next E-Class will offer a wide selection of engines, ranging from 184hp 4-cylinder to a 544hp V8 petrol engines, and 136hp 4-cylinder to 354hp V8 diesels. One can expect the usual V6 and V8-engines, plus a normally aspirated, 500+ HP 6.3-liter V8 for the E 63 by AMG.

New Mercedes SL spy photos

These are the best spy photos, with the new generation Mercedes SL, showing us how the new model will look like: it is clearly that it will borrow CLS’s headlights, because we can observe that they have similar form as those of the CLS Class. The new SL is programmed to be presented at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2008.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Station Wagon posts 14% sales growth in First Half of 2007

The E-Class station wagon, which received an extensive upgrade in mid-2006, is enjoying tremendous popularity with Mercedes-Benz customers. Deliveries of the upper-range station wagon have increased by 14 percent to 16,700 units since the beginning of this year. Approximately 185,000 customers have opted for the E-Class station wagon since the model’s market launch in March 2003.

The primary selling points of the E-Class station wagon are its elegance, comfort, and cargo volume of up to 1,950 liters. Moreover, it offers innovative safety technologies such as PRE-SAFE® and the optional Intelligent Light System. Around three quarters of all E-Class station wagon customers drive one of the four diesel variants. The most popular engine version for the upper-range Mercedes-Benz station wagon is the E 220 CDI, which is chosen by approximately 30 percent of customers.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class station wagon has also been well received by customers since its market debut in March 2001. The brand with the star has delivered some 365,000 units of the spacious C-Class station wagon to customers all over the world. The diesel variants are extremely popular for the C-Class station wagon as well, with more than two thirds of all customers worldwide choosing this option. Approximately 40 percent of customers have opted for the C 220 CDI engine.

Ever since the premiere of the first Mercedes-Benz station wagon in 1946, a total of 1.6 million Mercedes-Benz station wagons have been sold throughout the world. A total of 550,000 units of the current C- and E-Class station wagons have been delivered to customers since their market launch. In 2007, more than half of the C- and E-Class station wagons delivered by Mercedes-Benz went to customers in Germany. The second most important market for the Mercedes-Benz station wagons is the UK, followed by Japan.

In September 2007, Mercedes-Benz will present the successor model of the current C-Class station wagon at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. At the end of the year the model will be available at car dealerships in western Europe.

Electric Smart ForTwo on its way

Smart decided to introduce an electric version of its Smart ForTwo which will be powered by a 41 bhp electric engine capable of 70 mph and a 70 mile range. The electric car charges in 8 hours, and according to Smart engineers it consumes less than $3 worth of electricity. The speed enthusiasts have to buy another car if they want performance because the Smart will be capable to make the sprint from 0-60 mph in 19.8 seconds.

The electric Smart will get the Micro Hybrid Drive (MHD) featuring a starter generator allowing the Smart’s gas engine to turn off at a complete stop or when the speed of the vehicle is blow 5 mph. When accelerated the motor starts instantaneously according to the Smart engineers. Smart’s emissions will be lower than the Toyota Prius because the Smart achievs 103 g/km and the Prius 104 g/km.

Special edition of Mercedes E-Class targets corporate market

Mercedes-Benz is introducing an extensively equipped and competitively priced special edition of the E-Class Saloon exclusively for the corporate sector. The E-Class Executive ensures time spent on the road is relaxing, productive and above all safe and offers exceptional value at £28,515 on-the-road.
That’s £677 less than the E220 CDI Classic on which it is based, yet its enhanced equipment specification is worth an additional £2,543 – representing a saving of £3,220 including VAT over the standard car.

What’s more, the particularly strong residual values of the E-Class and low service and maintenance figures mean that the Executive’s overall monthly costs over three years/20,000 miles per annum are less than those of both the BMW 520d SE and the Audi A6 TDI TDV SE.
Its specially tailored package has been selected, after careful consultation with corporate customers, to support a busy professional life without raising benefit-in-kind tax liability.Building on the already impressive foundations of the standard E-Class saloon, it adds telephone pre-wiring which means that with the addition of a suitable cradle, a mobile can be controlled using the ergonomic multi-function steering wheel. There’s also a six-disc CD changer with MP3 compatibility which should prove invaluable on long motorway journeys.
The exquisite, understated styling of the E-Class is set off by a choice of three metallic colours – Iridium silver, Obsidian black, or the limited edition Palladium silver – as well as a style of 16 inch seven-spoke alloy wheels unique to this car, ensuring an air of exclusivity in the office car park.

Moving inside, chrome door sills with Mercedes-Benz lettering provide an added touch of style to an interior whose finish and quality of materials is designed to cosset and create a strong sense of well-being. The effect is enhanced by seats trimmed in black Artico – the leather-like material you would be hard pushed to distinguish from the real thing – and floor mats.

Business users are also bound to appreciate the comfort enhancing driver’s lumbar support, two zone climate control and front seats electronically adjustable for height and backrest angle. The multi-function steering wheel means the driver’s focus can remain firmly on the road.

The E-Class Executive is powered by an advanced 2.2-litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine developing 170 hp at 3,800 rpm and a useful 400 Nm of torque at just 2000 rpm. It’s characterised by a strong blend of good performance and economy, with 62 mph coming up in 8.4 sec, a top speed of 141 mph and a combined 44.8 mpg (42.2 in optional automatic guise) fuel consumption.

Key features of the engine include balancer shafts for added refinement, improved piston and cylinder head cooling for a reduced compression ratio and improved turbocharger responsiveness at low engine speeds. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while a five-speed automatic transmission with Tipfunction and Speedtronic cruise control is available as an option (£1480).

The E-Class is an eminently safe place in which to be and no other model in this segment can match its range of safety innovations. As well as dual stage front airbags and belt force limiters, there are front sidebags and windowbags and outer rear seat pre-tensioners. Neck-Pro head restraints help to reduce whiplash injuries.

PRE-SAFE®, first pioneered in the S-Class, recognises potentially dangerous situations, its ‘reflexes’ preparing occupants and the car for a potential accident as a precaution, thus gaining vital seconds. So if braking reaches a critical level, or a skid appears to be imminent based on signals from the standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), the system will automatically tension the front seatbelts and start to close the windows.

Adaptive Brakes encompass a number of safety and convenience features in addition to Brake Assist and a Hill Holder function. If you were to suddenly lift your foot from the accelerator, for example, brake line pressure is automatically increased to bring the brake pads into light contact with the discs so they are ready to bite immediately. The system also recognises wet conditions through prolonged use of wipers and automatically applies the brakes very gently at regular intervals to clear moisture from the discs.
There’s also the luxury of a Hold feature which comes into its own in slow moving queues of traffic. If you briefly press the brake pedal a little further once the car has been brought to a halt, the brakes then hold the car in place irrespective of whether you lift your foot off the pedal. And finally, severe braking will bring flashing brake lights into operation which have been demonstrated to elicit faster reactions in drivers following behind.
An agile, more satisfying driving experience is provided by the E-Class’s Direct Control package. This encompasses a number of chassis enhancements and includes a 10 per cent more direct steering ratio for instance, which means the car responds more readily while retaining the assured handling and ride stability that contributes to relaxed long distance cruising. More rigid spring link bearings in the four link front suspension more than double lateral rigidity, enhancing the E-Class’s neutral cornering characteristics. And the gearshift linkage is designed for a faster, more positive shift action.
As well as an automatic gearbox, other options include an automatically dimming rear view and driver’s mirror (£225); electrically adjustable folding and heated door mirrors (£230); heated front seats (£320); the Parktronic audible/visual front and rear parking system to avoid bumps and scrapes (£605); and 1/3:2/3 folding rear seats for greater loading flexibility (£340).
Despite its extensive features, the Executive’s P11D value of £28,300 and CO2 emissions of 167g/km (placing it in band E for a £165 road fund licence) mean a 22 per cent taxpayer is liable for £1432, and a 40 per cent taxpayer £2604, making it a very cost-effective entry into Mercedes E-Class ownership.

Mercedes launches the new E 300 Bluetec in Europe

The inventor of BLUETEC technology is entering a new era with the new E 300 BLUETEC. On the back of positive experiences gained in the American market since the autumn of 2006, the environment-compatible BLUETEC diesel system is now also available in a passenger car model in the European market.
Mercedes-Benz has achieved a massive reduction in emissions and compliance with the EU 5 standard whilst retaining the same favourable consumption figures. Thanks to the intelligent BLUETEC technology, this compression-ignition engine is one of the world’s cleanest and most efficient drive trains.
Environmental compatibility, driving pleasure and comfort are among the strengths of the new E 300 BLUETEC, with which Mercedes-Benz is launching its BLUETEC initiative in Europe. Based on the proven CDI models, this E-Class boasts cutting-edge emissions management and excellent ecological, economical and dynamic characteristics. The 3.0-litre V6 engine developing 155 kW/211 hp and an imposing 540 Nm of torque burns just 7.3 litres* of diesel per 100 kilometres and its emissions levels already fulfil future Euro stipulations.
The E 300 BLUETEC accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds* and is capable of a top speed of 244 km/h*. At the same time, the BLUETEC model – like all its E-Class stable-mates – combines the suspension comfort typical of Mercedes with the proverbial “feel-good” ambience in the interior and outstanding safety standards.
The BLUETEC technology developed by DaimlerChrysler does an excellent job of reducing diesel vehicle emissions, in particular nitrogen oxides. To this end, the engineers at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre pursue various strategies. For example, in an initial step the formation of nitrogen oxides in the E 300 BLUETEC has been reduced through optimisation measures inside the engine.

Mercedes takes R-Class down a notch

After selling only 18,168 samples of their R-Class in 2007, even after dropping the base price by $5,000, Mercedes will try taking the uber-wagon downmarket in 2008.

For starters, the cheapest R-Class you can get next year will be the 268hp R350, which has a V6 and does without all wheel drive to come in under $43,000. Originally, the cheapest R350 started at around $48,000. Other R models will retain standard AWD.

In the past, spotting a 500 HP AMG R63 has been difficult, probably due to its $80,000 price tag. Spotting one now will be even harder. All 2008 R-Class models will get the body cladding of the 2007 AMG (pictured above) and 18" wheels, but not the performance mods. No AMG R-Class will be offered in 2008.

The most expensive R next year will be the 221hp R320 CDI at just over $46,000.

Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz CLC Sportcoupe

A prototype of Mercedes’ upcoming CLC Sportcoupe has been spotted while filling up at a fuel station and with some surprisingly revealing camo-gear. The image, which turned up on the GermanCarZone forum, clearly shows the car’s new shape, including the new front-end, which appears almost identical to the C-class sedan.

Though the car won’t be arriving in showrooms until a month after its Geneva debut, its mechanicals will be based on the previous C-class model in an effort to keep costs low, according to earlier reports. There’s word also that it may be produced in Brazil rather than Germany and be sold in a limited number of markets. Click here to see our rendered preview of the car and for more details.

Mercedes launches 2008 C-class Estate

Just a few months following the market debut of the saloon, Mercedes-Benz is now unveilling the estate version of the new C-class. The new model offers a load capacity of 1,500L and includes an automatic opening tailgate for easy access. Compared to the outgoing model, the new estate consumes 12% less fuel, needing just 6.0L of juice per 100km.

There is a choice of three trim levels, Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde, and, like the sedan range, each features its own distinct grille to differentiate the models. Other features of the new car include towing capacity of as much as 1800 kilograms and an optional self-levelling suspension system.

The engine range consists of two four-cylinder petrol engines in the C180 and C200 Kompressor models, as well as two four-cylinder diesel engines in the C200 and C220 CDI models. As for the six-cylinder engine range, there is a choice of three petrol units developing 150 kW/204 hp, 170 kW/231 hp and 200 kW/272 hp, as well as the new C320 CDI with an output of 165 kW/224 hp. With the exception of the C 50, all engine variants are coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The C350 is partnered by the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes Benz seeks 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox

Mercedes is considering outsourcing production of transmissions for its next-gen A, B and C-class models, which could also lead to the closure of its current transmission plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany. The decision is said to be backed by CEO Dieter Zetsche, who considers the development of new transmissions as non-core to Mercedes. By outsourcing the development and manufacturing process to an outside supplier, engineers could potentially reduce costs and improvement innovation, a Mercedes insider revealed to Auto Motor und Sport.
According to the source, Mercedes is also seeking a supplier for a new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, giving it an edge over both Lexus and BMW who both plan to rely on fully-automatic eight-speed transmissions. A dual-clutch gearbox is better in both fuel-consumption and straight-line speed when compared with conventional autos. Mercedes is hoping that either Getrag or ZF develops and manufactures the new gearbox as designing the box itself would be too costly for the carmaker.

Mercedes launches Search & Send downloadable maps

In a bid to compete with BMW and its own Google Maps-based ConnectedDrive navigation package, rival Mercedes-Benz today announced that it has teamed up with both Yahoo and Google Maps to deliver an easy to use in-car navigation system.

The system will be available on The C, CL and S-class models from September 5th. Called Search & Send, the new system will let you send your favorite places to the cars Navigation system using a new ‘send to car’ icon on your home PC loaded with the Mercedes’ software.

The waypoint can then be downloaded using a special button attached to the car’s nav-system.
We are hoping that it also integrates a feature like the one found in BMW’s Google based system, which allows the driver to perform in-car Google searches so that drivers will be able to find locations they need whilst on the go.

AMG C63 Estate to debut at Frankfurt

It would appear that the Mercedes-Benz C350 Estate won’t be the fastest variant of Mercedes new wagon to be unveiled at Frankfurt. The folks at Carscoop have been tipped of by a German reader concerning AMG’s intentions to unveil their version of the C-Class wagon, the C63 Estate.

Like the C63 sedan, the Estate version will be powered by AMG’s 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 that produces 336kW and 600Nm, enough to propel the lighter sedan from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to an electronically limited 250km/h.

Mercedes-Benz reveals the new S300

The modular technology concept from Mercedes-Benz includes optimised combustion engines and customised hybrid solutions, which are deployed individually or in combination depending on the vehicle class, application profile and customer requirements.
A prime example comes in the shape of the S 300 BLUETEC HYBRID with its unique combination of BLUETEC and hybrid technology that has given rise to the world’s most efficient, most environment-compatible premium passenger car.
As a 4-cylinder with hybrid module it develops a combined system output of 165 kW / 224 hp and a maximum torque of 560 Nm, a figure more reminiscent of a large-displacement V8 petrol unit. The luxury saloon delivers effortless performance yet consumes just 5.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres - equivalent to just 142 grams of CO2 per kilometre 57 grams or around 30 percent less than the current consumption and emissions benchmark in the S Class segment.

The S 300 BLUETEC HYBRID has the potential to meet most stringent emissions standards such as EU6 or the BIN5 standard for 50 US states.

BENZ NEW ML 450 Hybrid

Mercedes-Benz will also be presenting the ML 450 HYBRID, due to be launched on the market in 2009 as the most economical two-mode petrol hybrid SUV worldwide. Its innovative two-mode hybrid system enables electric driving and satisfies the highest comfort demands. With a combined system output of 250 kW/340 hp and a combined maximum torque of 480 Nm, the ML 450 HYBRID consumes just 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres - equivalent to CO2 emissions of 185 g/km.
Product highlights at this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt also include the new C-Class Estate, which combines functionality with stylish design and hallmark Mercedes refinement. Mercedes-Benz will also be exhibiting various C-Class BLUETEC versions — with and without hybrid — which are due to be launched successively.

2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate

Mercedes-Benz is now unveiling the estate version of the new C-Class. The estate takes the trademark strengths of the saloon, such as safety, agility and comfort, and combines them with a significant increase in spaciousness and versatility.
Quite apart from being able to hold a maximum of 1500 litres, giving it a larger load capacity than any other premium-class estate in this market segment, the new C-Class Estate also offers a host of handy features for easy loading and safe transportation -a tailgate which opens and closes automatically at the push of a button, for example.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new Mercedes estate burns as much as twelve per cent less fuel. With an official NEDC consumption of 6.0 litres/100 km, the new C 200 CDI can make a single tank of fuel (66 litres) last for over 1000 kilometres. Just like the saloon, the estate version of the new C-Class has also been awarded an Environmental Certificate, which attests to the environmentally oriented development process as conforming with the international ISO standard. In terms of safety, the new estate blazes a trail with innovations of the likes of PRE-SAFE® and the Intelligent Light System, and distinguishes itself as the safest car in this vehicle class. Seven airbags, belt tensioners and belt force limiters, as well as crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints all make up part of the standard specification.
The new estate adopts the C-Class Saloon’s customer-focused concept for the design and equipment lines. There is a choice of three models - CLASSIC, ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE - which highlight the vehicle’s comfort or agility to differing degrees. The AVANTGARDE line features a large Mercedes star positioned in the centre of the radiator grille that emphasises its sporty, agile nature. This traditional distinctive mark of sporty models from Mercedes is now being employed in an estate model for the first time by the Stuttgart-based automotive brand. In the ELEGANCE model, a three-dimensional, louvred radiator grille with a high-gloss paint finish accentuates other brand-typical attributes such as comfort and luxury. The CLASSIC model, meanwhile, is deliberately more restrained and traditional.

Mercedes intoduces Search & Send technology

Mercedes-Benz USA today announced a first for U.S. drivers: the ability to send directions directly from their computers to their vehicles. The new technology, called Search & Send, which will be available September 5, has been developed in partnership with Google, Yahoo! and DaimlerChrysler Research, Engineering and Design North America (Palo Alto, CA).
It is being phased into the Mercedes-Benz model line starting with select vehicles equipped with Tele Aid, the company’s telematics and emergency response system. The Search & Send feature allows drivers to plot destinations, addresses and points of interest through the highly popular map sections of the Google or Yahoo! Maps websites and then simply click on a newly introduced “Send to Car” icon. The information is then sent directly to the vehicle’s GPS navigation unit. When the driver gets into the vehicle, pushing the i-button of the Tele Aid system downloads the destination directly to the vehicle’s navigation system and prompts the driver as to whether to start route guidance immediately or save the information for later use.
